Two people were shot in separate overnight incidents in Champaign on Sunday, leaving a 17-year-old boy with a potentially life-threatening wound and a 36-year-old man hospitalized with a head injury.

Champaign Police are asking the public for help after information on both cases remains extremely limited.

A teen walking home gets shot

Champaign Police were dispatched to an area hospital at 1:54 a.m. Sunday after the 17-year-old male arrived by personal vehicle with a gunshot wound to the abdomen.

The victim told police he was walking in the 2000 block of Moreland Boulevard when he was struck by gunfire.

"One left a 17-year-old male with what Champaign police said was a 'potentially life-threatening' gunshot wound to the abdomen," according to a News-Gazette report.

The teen remains hospitalized in stable condition.

A second victim walks in hours later

At 5:32 a.m., the same emergency department received a second shooting victim. A 36-year-old man walked in with a head injury.

He initially told staff the injury came from a sports-related incident in the Garden Hills neighborhood. Medical personnel quickly determined the wound was from a gunshot.

The victim provided no further information about the incident. He also remains hospitalized in stable condition.

Police have not found crime scenes

Champaign Police said investigators have not located crime scenes or evidence of gunfire in either area where victims reported being shot.

"Victims provided general locations in Champaign where they reported being at the time of their injuries, but Champaign police have not located crime scenes or evidence of gunfire in or around either of the given areas," police said in a statement.

"Because of this, investigators are presently working with limited details to determine what happened, who is responsible, and even whether these incidents took place in Champaign," according to the News-Gazette.

No arrests have been made in either case.
