Cicero police issue murder warrant a year after man found dead in bedroom

Cicero, Ill. (Aug. 28) -- Cicero police have secured a first-degree murder arrest warrant for Jonathan J. Carvillo-Varela, 35, a Venezuela native who is wanted in connection with the death of Eduardo Mora Martinez, 40, found inside his home exactly one year ago this month.

Police were called around 1:24 p.m. on Aug. 28, 2025, to the 2800 block of South Cicero Avenue after Martinez's friends went to check on him. According to the Cicero Police Department, the friends were concerned because Martinez had not shown up for work and was not answering his phone.

When they arrived, they found Martinez on his bedroom floor with head injuries. Investigators also found signs of a struggle in the room. The Cook County Medical Examiner's Office said Martinez was believed to have been strangled.

Detectives said they have remained in contact with Martinez's family throughout the yearlong investigation and provided updates as the case progressed.

Suspect background

Chicago police records show Carvillo-Varela was arrested twice in 2025 for vehicle registration violations. He was cited on Jan. 9 for having no valid registration and again on May 23 for using a canceled or revoked registration.
