Decatur Man Arrested in First Degree Murder After 23-Year-Old Killed in Shooting
A 21-year-old Decatur man has been arrested for First Degree Murder after 23-year-old Deamontae L. Weaver was shot and killed at a Decatur home on May 22.
Jarvis M. Smith Jr., 21, was taken into custody by the United States Marshal's Service Great Lakes Regional Task Force after police linked him to the shooting death of Deamontae L. Weaver, 23, in Decatur.
Shooting Victim Identified
Decatur police responded to reports of a shooting just after 10 a.m. on Friday, May 22, near the intersection of North Poole Street and West Center Street.
When officers arrived, they found Weaver inside a home in the 900 block of West Center Street. He had been shot and was transported to the hospital, where he later died.
"When they arrived, officers found a 23-year-old man, later identified as Deamontae L. Weaver of Decatur, who had been shot inside a home in the 900 block of West Center Street. He was taken to the hospital, where he died."
According to the Decatur Police Department, Weaver was a Decatur resident.
Suspect Taken Into Custody
Police obtained an arrest warrant for Jarvis M. Smith Jr. later that same day. Smith faces a charge of First Degree Murder in connection with the shooting.
Smith was located in the 1000 block of West Main Street in Decatur. The United States Marshal's Service Great Lakes Regional Task Force took him into custody.
Investigation Continues
The Decatur Police Department has not closed its investigation. Authorities are asking anyone with information about the shooting to come forward.
