Decatur man sentenced to eight years in prison after killing roommate
DECATUR, Ill. -- A 23-year-old Decatur man was sentenced to prison on Tuesday after shooting and killing his roommate last December.
Joshua J. Gregg was sentenced to eight years in the Illinois Department of Corrections and one year of Mandatory Supervised Release. Earlier this summer, Gregg pleaded guilty to a Class 2 Felony charge of involuntary manslaughter. As part of the plea deal, three counts were dismissed, including aggravated unlawful possession of a weapon, reckless discharge of a firearm, and a Class 3 Felony charge of involuntary manslaughter.
Gregg's prison sentence stems from a deadly shooting that took place on Dec. 5, 2025, at Sportsman Park in Decatur. Officers located 18-year-old Landin Bodine of Mt. Zion with a gunshot wound. He was transported to Decatur Memorial Hospital, where he was later pronounced dead.
The victim's family had remembered Bodine as someone who could always light up a room.
"There's moments where, you know, we have such fond memories of him," Landin's mother, Amanda White, said. "and we're smiling and we're laughing."
After Tuesday's sentencing, family members said they were unhappy Gregg did not receive the maximum sentence of 14 years. In court, the judge considered multiple statements that were made during the hearing. Gregg's mother and Landin's parents both spoke.
Gregg was given credit for time previously served from Dec. 6, 2025 to Aug. 31, 2026. Records also show that the court found the offense was committed as a result of the use, abuse, or addiction to alcohol or a controlled substance, and the court recommends Gregg be placed in a substance abuse program.
