The Hunt for a Ghost Rider

A black Kawasaki ZX-6R motorcycle with no license plate became a target in Springfield and Sangamon County after residents reported seeing it speeding dangerously through their neighborhoods.

The Illinois State Police arrested Austin L. Huddleston, 30, of Springfield, on July 4. He faces four felony counts of aggravated fleeing and eluding, two counts of reckless driving, and two counts of speeding more than 35 mph over the limit, according to ISP officials.

How Social Media Caught Him

ISP Troop 6 asked the public for help on May 28, 2026. The agency released information about the motorcycle involved in multiple reckless driving incidents across Springfield and Sangamon County.

"The motorcycle was observed traveling at extremely high speeds while passing vehicles on the shoulder, disregarding traffic control devices, and creating dangerous situations for the public," according to an ISP news release.

Tips from the public helped investigators identify Huddleston as the driver. Two arrest warrants were issued before troopers took him into custody over the Independence Day weekend.

Where the Motorcycle Was Seen

The Journal-Courier reported that the motorcycle had been spotted in specific locations:

  • Illinois Route 125 near Arenzville Road in Beardstown
  • Around Bruns Lane and West Jefferson Street in Springfield

Police said the bike had no license plate and was creating a serious danger to other motorists.

The Arrest and What Comes Next

Huddleston was booked into Sangamon County Jail and remains in custody pending his first court appearance, according to Capitol City Now and ISP officials.

Troopers seized the motorcycle during the arrest.

ISP credited several agencies for helping with the investigation:

  • ISP Digital Crimes Unit
  • Statewide Terrorism & Intelligence Center
  • Secretary of State Police
  • Secretary of State Auto Theft Task Force
  • Cass County Sheriff's Department
  • Pleasant Plains Police Department

"ISP prioritizes public safety and utilizes many tools and resources to combat reckless driving," the agency said in its release.

The case shows how social media outreach and public tips can lead to arrests in cases where drivers try to stay off the radar. Huddleston's court date has not yet been set, according to online court records reviewed by Capitol City Now.
