Aurora: Coroner Identifies Missing Woman Shafia Murad, Rules Drowning as Preliminary Cause of Death
The Kane County Coroner has identified the body found in an Aurora retention pond as Shafia Murad, 32, who was reported missing May 28. The preliminary cause of death is drowning, and police said no evidence of foul play was found.
The identification
The Kane County Coroner's Office confirmed Wednesday that the body found in a retention pond in Aurora belongs to Shafia Murad, 32, of Aurora. Authorities used dental records and fingerprints to make the positive identification, according to Coroner Dr. Monica Silva.
Murad was reported missing on May 28 after she was last seen around 1:30 p.m. near the Chicago Premium Outlets.
The search
Aurora police reviewed surveillance footage and searched the outlet mall and surrounding area after receiving the missing person report. On the evening of June 1, Aurora Police Department drone operators spotted a body in a pond near North Farnsworth Avenue and Corporate Boulevard.
Authorities pulled the body from the water that same evening.
The findings
An autopsy was performed on Wednesday, June 3. The coroner's office said the preliminary cause of death is drowning.
Toxicology samples were also sent to a national forensic lab for analysis, Silva said.
No foul play found
Aurora Police said their preliminary investigation found no evidence of foul play.
"The community's concern and assistance were appreciated throughout this case. Our condolences are with Shafia's family and loved ones during this difficult time."
The manner of Murad's death remains under investigation by both the coroner and the Aurora Police Department.
