An 18-year-old man is jailed and facing a Class X felony charge after a fight inside a Bloomington grocery store turned into a shooting that left one man wounded in the chest and arm.

Naquin Terrell, 18, was charged with aggravated battery with discharge of a firearm and aggravated discharge of a firearm, according to court documents from the McLean County State's Attorney's Office. Prosecutors want Terrell to remain in the McLean County Jail before trial.

"Naquin said no one threatened him, but his instinct kicked in and felt that he had to defend himself," the court document said, according to 25 News Now.

Terrell also told police he did not realize he shot the victim because the incident happened too fast, according to the court filing.

The shooting on West Market Street

Bloomington Police responded to the Red and Blue Grocery in the 1000 block of West Market Street around 3:15 p.m. on Friday, June 27, following reports of a fight and shots fired, according to police spokesperson Bryce Janssen.

Officers found evidence of gunfire inside the store. A bullet and casing were recovered inside, and another bullet was found outside, according to court documents. The store's glass door was damaged by a bullet.

The victim left the store with the shooter chasing him, according to the court filing. He arrived at a local hospital by private vehicle. His injuries were not life-threatening, police said.

"The victim reportedly told police he did not remember the incident and did not know who shot him," according to 25 News Now.

An earlier incident earlier that day

Terrell's connection to the shooting was traced through surveillance video, but police first encountered him earlier on Friday.

Terrell was working at a Burger King on Veterans Parkway when three people entered the restaurant with firearms around 1 p.m., prosecutors said. Terrell spoke with police about that incident but chose not to press charges, according to police.

Investigators later identified Terrell in security-camera footage from the Red and Blue Grocery fight. He was seen wearing the same clothes from the Burger King incident, prosecutors said.

The charges

Terrell faces two charges:

  1. Aggravated battery with discharge of a firearm — a Class X felony carrying a mandatory prison sentence of up to 30 years if found guilty
  2. Aggravated discharge of a firearm — another felony charge

Investigators have not recovered the gun used in the shooting, according to court documents.

The Bloomington Police Department asked anyone with information to contact Detective Logan Fosdick, according to Cities929.

The investigation remains ongoing.
