Carbondale police find man hiding in rooftop A/C unit after business burglary

CARBONDALE, Ill. — A St. Louis man was arrested for burglary after Carbondale Police officers found him hiding inside a hollowed-out air conditioner unit on the roof of a business in the 2100 block of West Main Street.

Lewis A. Walsingham, 34, of East St. Louis, was charged with burglary and criminal damage to property. He was taken into custody and booked at the Jackson County Jail.

According to the Carbondale Police Department, officers first responded to the business at approximately 12:42 p.m. on Thursday, October 1, after receiving a report of a business burglary. During their initial investigation, officers learned that the suspect had damaged an air conditioning unit on the roof of the building.

Hours later, at around 8:10 p.m., officers received information that the suspect may have returned to the business. When they searched the roof again, they discovered burglary tools and Walsingham, who was concealed inside the hollowed-out air conditioner unit.

The incident highlights the unusual lengths suspects can go to avoid detection. Walsingham faced no reported resistance during his arrest.
