Carbondale: Jackson County to Simulate Major Tornado Disaster in June 9 Full-Scale Exercise
Jackson County emergency agencies will conduct a full-scale tornado response exercise on June 9 simulating a severe tornado striking southwestern Carbondale. The drill will test communication, shelter operations, and interagency coordination.
Emergency crews across Jackson County will spend the afternoon of June 9 pretending a devastating tornado just tore through the southwestern side of Carbondale. The goal is to find out if the community can actually respond when the real thing happens.
A realistic disaster drill
The Jackson County/Carbondale Tornado Response 26 Full-Scale Exercise will bring together local emergency management officials, fire departments, law enforcement agencies, emergency medical services, public health officials, hospitals, public works departments, volunteer organizations and private-sector partners, according to a news release from the Jackson County Sheriff's Office.
The exercise will simulate widespread structural damage, debris management challenges and public information operations. Participants will respond to scenarios designed to test emergency plans, communication systems, resource coordination, damage assessment procedures, shelter operations and interagency decision-making under realistic disaster conditions, according to Jackson County Emergency Management.

"This exercise provides an important opportunity for our agencies and partners to work together in a realistic environment," Jackson County Emergency Management Coordinator Orval Rowe said in a news release. "By evaluating our capabilities before an actual disaster occurs, we can identify strengths, address areas for improvement, and enhance our ability to protect the residents of Jackson County."
Officials said the drill is part of an ongoing commitment to preparedness and aligns with state and federal emergency management standards. Following the exercise, participating agencies will conduct a comprehensive review to identify lessons learned and improve future response capabilities, according to KBSI FOX23.
What residents should expect
Residents in Carbondale may notice an increased presence of emergency vehicles and personnel operating at designated exercise locations along Chautauqua Road within the city limits throughout the afternoon of June 9, according to the sheriff's office.
Officials emphasized that the activity is only a training exercise and that no actual emergency exists unless otherwise announced.

Southern Illinois sits in a region prone to severe weather and tornadoes. Regular training exercises help ensure local responders can act quickly and effectively when severe weather threatens Jackson County, officials said.
