Decatur City Council Approves $180,000 Study For Future Bus Service
Decatur City Council approved an $180,000 payment to the Champaign County Regional Planning Commission for a bus service study to determine future transit needs and ensure ADA-compliant stops.
The Decatur City Council approved a $180,000 payment to the Champaign County Regional Planning Commission on Wednesday to create a road map for the future of city bus service.
The payment will cover the cost of an urban area transportation study. The study will identify which bus stops are no longer being used and where new stops may be needed.
City officials said the study will also ensure every stop is ADA-compliant for riders.
"We need this because, as you know, transit has changed drastically in the past three years," said Economic and Community Development Director Lacie Elzy. "We have realigned some of our fixed routes, and we've introduced micro-transit."
Elzy explained that phase three of their transit plan is to conduct a comprehensive bus stop study. The study will find which stops are no longer being used and where new stops may be needed.
The study will help Decatur understand what is working with city bus stops and what must change going forward.
