Elgin Man Dhruv Patel Faces Felonies After Allegedly Pulling Gun on Hoffman Estates Police

An Elgin man is facing multiple felony charges after police say he pulled a handgun on officers during a traffic stop in Hoffman Estates.
Dhruv Patel, 26, of Elgin, was charged Monday with seven felony counts, according to the Hoffman Estates Police Department. The charges include aggravated unlawful possession of a firearm, two counts of aggravated assault of a peace officer, and four counts of aggravated resisting arrest, according to FOX 32 Chicago.
The Traffic Stop
The incident occurred at about 6:41 p.m. on May 14 in the 5700 block of River Birch Drive, the Daily Herald reported.
Police said an officer stopped a motorcycle that was being driven on a public roadway without valid registration. During the investigation, officers determined Patel was driving with a suspended license, according to FOX 32 Chicago.
Confrontation With Officers
As officers attempted to take Patel into custody, police said he pulled a handgun from his sweater and tried to point it at them, the Daily Herald reported.
"Officers were able to maintain physical control of Patel until additional units arrived," police said, according to the Daily Herald.
Responding officers disarmed Patel and arrested him. Minor injuries were reported by officers. Patel was not injured but was taken to a local hospital for evaluation, according to both outlets.

Patel was scheduled to appear in court Tuesday in Rolling Meadows, FOX 32 Chicago reported.
The case underscores the dangers officers face during routine traffic stops. Hoffman Estates police emphasized that their training allowed them to maintain control of the situation until backup arrived.
