A horn honk. A lane change. A fatal shooting on Elgin streets.

A Kane County judge sentenced Dru K. Jarvis, 27, of Lake in the Hills, to 96 years in prison for a road rage shooting that killed an Elgin man and seriously wounded another in 2020.

Kane County Circuit Judge John Barsanti handed down the sentence on July 1, according to Kane County State's Attorney Jamie L. Mosser.

"Today's sentence holds this defendant accountable for a completely senseless act of violence that took the life of Francisco Trujillo and forever changed the life of another innocent victim," Assistant State's Attorney Mark Stajdohar said. "Dru Jarvis will rightfully spend the rest of his life in prison, where he will never again have the opportunity to shoot a gun at another person."

The shooting at State and Kimball

The incident occurred in the early morning of August 22, 2020, at the intersection of State Street and Kimball Street in Elgin, according to court records and prosecutors.

Jarvis was riding as a passenger in a vehicle driving south on Route 30. The vehicle attempted to change lanes in front of a Mini Cooper, prompting the Mini Cooper's driver to honk, according to CBS Chicago and the Daily Herald.

Jarvis's vehicle pulled alongside the Mini Cooper at the intersection. Jarvis then fired multiple shots out the window, prosecutors said.

  • The driver of the Mini Cooper was struck in the leg and survived.
  • The front-seat passenger, Francisco Trujillo-Uscanga, 41, of Elgin, was struck in the torso.

Trujillo-Uscanga died a short time later at AMITA Health St. Joseph Hospital, authorities said.

"The prosecution team is very grateful that the surviving victim lived through this horrific attack and had the courage to testify about what happened that day," Stajdohar said. "We hope he can now move forward with his life."

A second shooting helped connect Jarvis to the murder

One week after the fatal shooting, Jarvis committed another shooting on the 300 block of South McLean Boulevard in Elgin on August 29, 2020, according to prosecutors.

Jarvis was arrested and charged in that second incident. In 2021, he was found guilty of aggravated discharge of a weapon and sentenced to four years in prison, the Daily Herald reported.

That arrest helped investigators connect him to the August 22 murder of Trujillo-Uscanga, authorities said.

The sentence

A jury convicted Jarvis in October 2025 on three charges, according to the Daily Herald and CBS Chicago:

  1. First-degree murder (Class X felony)
  2. Attempted first-degree murder (Class X felony)
  3. Armed violence (Class X felony)

Judge Barsanti ordered the sentences to run consecutively:

  • 45 years for first-degree murder (100% must be served)
  • 31 years for attempted first-degree murder (at least 85% must be served)
  • 20 years for armed violence (at least 50% must be served)

Jarvis received credit for 887 days already served in jail, the Daily Herald reported.

Trujillo-Uscanga and the surviving victim were co-workers driving home from work in Huntley when the shooting occurred, according to Lake and McHenry County Scanner.
