A Missing Person Search Ends in Tragedy

The search for Destiny Neal, a 16-year-old Elgin resident, ended in tragedy this weekend. Authorities confirmed Monday that her body was recovered from the Fox River on Sunday afternoon, just two days after she was reported missing.

The Kane County Coroner's Office identified the deceased female as Neal after the Elgin Fire Department pulled her body from the water north of the Kimball Street Bridge, according to NBC Chicago and CBS Chicago.

"The Kane County Coroner, Dr. Monica Silva, and her staff extend their deepest condolences to the family and loved ones of young Destiny Neal," officials said in a release.

Timeline of the Disappearance

According to Elgin police, the timeline of events unfolded quickly over the weekend:

  • Friday, June 19, approximately 7 p.m. — Neal was last seen walking in the 1200 block of Abbott Drive in Elgin, according to a missing person flyer cited by NBC Chicago.
  • Friday evening — Elgin police responded to a missing person report for Neal.
  • Saturday — Law enforcement and community members continued searching for the teenager.
  • Sunday afternoon — The Elgin Fire Department recovered a body from the Fox River.
  • Monday — The Kane County Coroner's Office confirmed the body was Neal and announced an autopsy had been performed.

Investigation Shifts to Death Case

The case has been reclassified from a missing person investigation to an active death investigation. An autopsy was conducted Monday, but key questions remain unanswered.

Toxicology samples were collected and sent to a national forensic laboratory for extensive analysis, according to Elgin police. The cause of death is pending those results. The manner of death remains under investigation by the Kane County Coroner in cooperation with the Elgin Police Department.

Authorities have not released additional details regarding the circumstances surrounding Neal's death.

A Pattern of Water Deaths in the Region

Neal's death is part of a troubling trend in the Chicago area. NBC Chicago reported that journalists have spoken to police about at least 11 death investigations involving bodies of water in the region so far in 2026. Those cases span from Elk Grove Village to Aurora, Schaumburg, and downtown Chicago.

Community Mourns

Residents throughout Elgin and the Fox Valley shared missing person alerts and offered support after Neal disappeared. The confirmation of her death has left the community grieving.

The Elgin Police Department is asking anyone with information about the case to contact them.

The investigation remains open.
