A kitchen fire destroyed a Naperville apartment unit Saturday evening, causing an estimated $125,000 in damage. No one was hurt, but the family that lived there now has nowhere to go.

The Naperville Emergency Communications Center received a fire alarm at 6:36 p.m. on Saturday, May 23. Residents told first responders there was a fire on the third floor of a building in the 30W00 block of Capistrano Court, west of Route 59 and north of 75th Street.

A major response for a single unit

The alarm was immediately upgraded to a General Alarm Assignment. According to the official fire report submitted by Stephen Shink, Chief Financial Officer and Deputy Chief of the Naperville Fire Department, the response included:

  • 3 engines
  • 2 ladder trucks
  • 2 medic units
  • 1 heavy rescue
  • 2 battalion commanders

Fire suppression companies completed a 360-degree survey of the structure and established command before making entry.

"Upon making entry into the occupancy, an active fire was found in the residence's kitchen. All occupants were confirmed out of the structure."

Hand lines were deployed to extinguish the fire. Crews then overhauled the fire area and extinguished smoldering embers to ensure the hazard was fully contained.

No injuries, but a unit lost

The DuPage County Sheriff's Police Department assisted the Naperville Fire Department on the scene. All residents were accounted for and safe.

The fire was determined to be accidental. The damaged unit was deemed uninhabitable, but adjoining units were not impacted.

"There were no reported injuries to civilians or firefighters," according to the fire department report.

The family that lived in the third-floor unit will need to find temporary housing. The cost of repairs or replacement will fall on the property owner, the insurance company, or both.

Naperville residents are reminded to test smoke alarms regularly and to ensure kitchen safety practices are followed, especially during cooking.
