Naperville residents and visitors should expect a heavy police presence in downtown this Monday, the Naperville Police Department announced Thursday. Officers are preparing for a planned teen gathering that has been promoted across social media platforms.

The department shared a flyer advertising a "Downtown Naperville Teen Takeover" in its social media post. The flyer has been circulating online in the days leading up to the event.

"In an effort to help ensure the safety of everyone in our community, residents and visitors can expect to see a significant police presence in and around the downtown area," the Naperville Police Department said in a post on social media on Thursday.

Police said they welcome anyone who plans to gather lawfully and respectfully. The department also made clear that it will not tolerate criminal behavior.

"Anyone who chooses to engage in criminal activity, disorderly conduct, or acts that threaten public safety will be met with zero tolerance and held accountable to the fullest extent of the law," the department said.

A Pattern From Past Months

This is not the first time Naperville has dealt with large teen gatherings in recent months. In April, four people were arrested during a teen takeover in the city, according to Naperville Patch.

Similar gatherings took place last May, when hundreds of teens assembled over a two-day period. Some of those attendees faced felony charges, Patch reported.

The recurring nature of these events has prompted the police department to take a proactive stance. Rather than waiting for incidents to unfold, officers are positioning themselves in advance of Monday's planned gathering.

What Residents Should Know

The Naperville Police Department's message to the community is straightforward. Those who plan to attend the gathering should do so peacefully. Those who choose to engage in criminal activity will face consequences.

The department did not specify the exact number of officers who will be deployed Monday. It also did not identify specific locations beyond the general downtown area.

Residents who have questions about the gathering can monitor the Naperville Police Department's social media accounts for updates as the event approaches.
