More Than 100,000 Illinois Residents Will Lose SNAP Benefits This Month
Rockford — As Illinois officials estimate more than 100,000 residents will lose SNAP benefits this month, the Northern Illinois Food Bank is hosting an emergency drive-through distribution Saturday morning to help families in need.
The event runs from 9 to 11 a.m. at the Northern Illinois Food Bank Northwest Center at 1397 Sandy Hollow Road in Rockford. Volunteers serve visitors who remain in their vehicles as the food bank distributes free groceries on a first come, first served basis.
No ID or registration is required for the distribution. Anyone in need is welcomed to the event while supplies last.
Emergency Relief for Rising Food Costs
This emergency pop-up distribution is meant to provide immediate relief for residents impacted by rising food costs and changes in federal food assistance. The Northern Illinois Food Bank serves 13 counties in Illinois and frequently holds events like these to help families throughout the region.
The food bank also operates a neighborhood market at 1397 Sandy Hollow Road where area residents in need can shop once a week. The indoor market is open from 1 to 6 p.m. on Tuesdays and from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Thursdays.
A Critical Service During Economic Uncertainty
According to the food bank, the emergency distribution responds directly to the state's SNAP benefit cuts. Illinois officials project the SNAP changes will impact a significant number of residents statewide.
The food bank staffed the Saturday event with volunteers to manage the drive-through line and ensure efficient distribution of food packages to those who need them most.
