Fresh Food, Fresh Faces As Old Capitol Market Begins New Season

The Old Capitol Farmer's Market opened for its 27th season Saturday, bringing fresh produce and local goods to the Springfield Decatur area community.

Jay Shanle, Executive Director of Downtown Springfield Inc., said the Farmer's Market allows the community to connect to where their food is coming from.

"We are down state's largest producer only market. What that means is you're meeting the people that grew, or raised, or made your food," Shanle said.

"I think that's a big draw here because it's an authentic market. You get to meet the people that are putting the food on your table."

SNAP customers can use their SNAP card and get double points at the Farmer's Market.

The Farmers Market is open 8 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. on Wednesdays and 8 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. on Saturdays.

The Old Capitol Farmer's Market has been a staple of the Decatur Springfield area for years, bringing together local farmers, vendors, and residents every week.

Community Connection Through Local Food

Shanle emphasized that the market provides an authentic experience for shoppers who want to know where their food comes from and who produced it.

The market location near the Old State Capitol has made it a gathering spot for visitors and locals alike throughout the years.

Market Hours And SNAP Benefits

The market operates on a consistent schedule that makes it accessible to the community. SNAP shoppers receive double points at the market, making fresh food more affordable for families in the area.

The market continues to serve the Decatur Springfield community with its focus on local, producer-only goods.
