Quad Cities fans race for tickets to surprise Grammy-winning artist
Davenport, Iowa — The line for Phoebe Bridgers wrapped around the block Friday as fans scrambled to get into a surprise pop-up concert that sold out in minutes.
Venue officials at the Raccoon Motel handed out 120 wristbands before turning away the rest of the crowd. The show began at 8 p.m. with doors opening at 6 p.m. Attendees surrendered their phones to Yondr pouches to keep the performance recording-free.
Bridgers, a four-time Grammy winner and member of the supergroup boygenius, is touring America with secret pop-up shows. Fans said she is performing new music at the intimate venues.
"I'm so ecstatic. I wouldn't want to be here with anybody else," fan Malorie Hoegner said while hugging her friend. "We love Phoebe Bridgers so much. We're so excited, and we're so grateful to have this opportunity and for her to be in a town like this so we can hear all the music."
Tracking the mystery tour
Quad Cities residents tracked Bridgers' movements across social media platforms in the days leading up to the show. Fans monitored Instagram and Reddit for clues about her next location.
"I actually was sitting in my bed this morning, and I got a notification from Source Bridgers on Instagram," fan Morgan Hirsch said. "It said, 'Get ready, Iowa!' and I jumped out of my bed. I got ready. I brushed my teeth, and I drove down here as fast as I could. I'm so excited for her to come here. I've been listening to her music for quite a while now."
A hometown moment for local fans
For some Quad Cities fans, the show meant they did not have to travel out of the region to see a major artist perform live.
"I kind of suspected she was in Davenport or coming to Davenport because of the past few days," said Sierra Yates, who lives just minutes from the venue. "It means a lot because I've been listening to her for quite a while now, and I connect very deeply with her music. So her coming to my hometown and not even having to travel, like I live like three minutes away, it's really great."
Bridgers is known for her melancholy lyrics and a musical style that blends acoustic and electronic sounds. Her critically acclaimed albums include "Punisher" and "Stranger in the Alps." Standout tracks like "Scott Street," "Motion Sickness," "Moon Song," "I Know the End," and "Kyoto" have built a dedicated fan base that follows her closely on social media.
The Davenport pop-up is part of a broader secret tour that has drawn fans to surprise locations across the country. Bridgers has been nominated for 11 Grammys and won four, cementing her status as one of the most respected singer-songwriters of her generation.
