A convoy of emergency response vehicles shut down several roads in downtown Rockford on Tuesday morning. The procession escorted John Morgan, 53, from the Winnebago County Coroner's Office to a nearby funeral home.
Morgan was a firefighter and paramedic with the Harlem-Roscoe Fire Protection District. He died while on duty, but not in the line of duty.
"This is a devastating loss for our department, our community, and everyone who had the privilege of knowing John," said John Bergeron, Harlem-Roscoe Fire Chief, in a statement Monday. "He was more than a firefighter and paramedic. He was a trusted colleague, a dedicated public servant, a mentor, and a friend."
The details of his death
According to the Winnebago County Coroner's Office, Morgan died of natural causes from cardiac complications. He was of Caledonia, Illinois.
Morgan began feeling ill while working a shift at Harlem-Roscoe Fire Station #3 in Roscoe. He was found unresponsive and not breathing in a bathroom around 9:20 p.m. on May 31. He was pronounced dead at 10:03 p.m.
The coroner's office determined the cause and manner of death to be natural.
A career defined by service
The Harlem-Roscoe Fire Department said Morgan dedicated his life to protecting others and answering the call for help whenever it came.
"Whether responding to fires, medical emergencies, rescues, or community events, he approached every assignment with courage, humility, and a servant's heart," the department said in a news release.
Several surrounding departments offered condolences on social media, including the Rockton Fire Protection District, City of Rockford Firefighters Local 413, and the Stillman Fire Protection District.
What happens next
Fire Chief Bergeron said details about memorial and funeral services will be shared as they become available. He asked community members to keep Morgan's family and the Harlem-Roscoe Fire Department in their thoughts during this difficult time.
"The members of the Harlem-Roscoe Fire Department are grieving the loss of a brother who stood beside them during both the most challenging and most rewarding moments of their careers," the department said. "As they continue to serve the community during this difficult time, they ask for patience, understanding, and support."
Rockford-area residents can expect further information on how to pay their respects in the coming days.
