Rockford, Loves Park, Machesney Park: Mail Delivery Times and Carriers Change Starting June 27
About 30 postal routes in Rockford, Loves Park, and Machesney Park will change starting June 27 as the U.S. Postal Service consolidates routes. Delivery times and carriers may shift, but no letter carriers will be laid off.
Your mail could arrive at a different time. Your letter carrier could be someone new. Starting next week, about 30 postal routes across Rockford, Loves Park, and Machesney Park will shift as the U.S. Postal Service consolidates delivery routes.
The changes begin June 27 and are part of a nationwide effort by the Postal Service to adjust to vacancies and retirements, according to Lawrence Steward, president of National Association of Letter Carriers Local 245.
"No letter carriers will be laid off as a result of these route adjustments," Steward said in a text message to the Rockford Register Star.
What residents can expect
The Postal Service is reorganizing routes to better match current workload and staffing needs. The goal is to have letter carriers work a full eight-hour assignment on a single route, rather than routinely carrying portions of other routes to fill their day, Steward said.
Residents in the affected areas should expect:
- Delivery times may shift earlier or later than usual
- A different letter carrier than the one who has served the neighborhood for years
- Temporary inconsistencies as carriers learn their new routes
Steward asked the public to exercise patience during the transition.
"Letter carriers are asking for the public's patience as they learn new routes and managers adjust to the new system and delivery pattern," Steward said. "Letter carriers want to do their job safely, professionally and efficiently while taking care of their customers."
Why the changes now
The route adjustments are not unique to the Rockford area. Steward said the Postal Service is conducting similar route adjustments nationwide. The changes address staffing gaps created by retirements and vacancies that have accumulated over recent years.
The union is monitoring the process closely. Steward said the union's focus is ensuring the Postal Service uses accurate data during the consolidation.
"The union's focus is making sure the Postal Service uses accurate data and that any problems created by the adjustments are identified and corrected as quickly as possible," Steward said.
The bigger picture
For many Rockford area residents, their mail carrier is a familiar face. The person who delivers the bills, the packages, and the holiday cards has often been the same person for years. Those relationships will change as routes are redrawn.
Steward noted that delivery time changes are the most noticeable impact for customers. Some neighborhoods may see mail arrive earlier. Others may see it arrive later. The Postal Service has not provided specific route-by-route maps of the changes.
