A West Side Institution Ends Its Era

The Lutheran Church of Good Shepherd held its final worship service on Sunday, May 24, closing a chapter that spanned nearly eight decades for Rockford's west side.

The congregation last met at 1829 N. Rockton Avenue at 10:30 a.m., according to WIFR. Church members and leaders gathered to celebrate what the church called a legacy of service to the community.

From Sanctuary to Gymnasium

The building itself has already been repurposed, even as the congregation said its goodbye.

In 2022, the church donated its property to the YMCA of Rock River Valley, according to WIFR. The YMCA invested $3.7 million to transform the former sanctuary into a gymnasium. The basement became an art studio, lounge, tech room, game space, and cafeteria. Old Sunday School classrooms are now a yoga studio and exercise space.

The Good Shepherd YMCA officially opened in 2024, but the congregation continued using a small chapel on the property for worship services until Sunday.

"I am thankful for the faithful members of Good Shepherd who built and maintained this property for decades, and then stepped out in faith to give their building to the YMCA and the people of Northwest Rockford," said Rev. Dr. Eric Lemonholm, pastor of Good Shepherd, in a news release. "The mission of Good Shepherd lives on at the Good Shepherd YMCA!"

Becca Homb, Executive Director of the YMCA of Rock River Valley, said the organization is honored to continue serving the community in new ways.

A New Congregation Takes the Chapel

The chapel space on the property will not sit empty. A new church plant has been blessed to take it over.

Table of Grace, a new United Methodist church pastored by Rev. Violet Johnicker, will now meet at the Good Shepherd YMCA, according to WIFR.

"We are so grateful to be part of the next chapter of ministry at Good Shepherd," Rev. Johnicker wrote in a news release. "Because of the dedication of generations of faithful people in this neighborhood, this new church community has been blessed with the resources to offer an inclusive and welcoming space for people of all ages."

What It Means for the Neighborhood

The closure reflects a broader pattern affecting churches across the country. Congregations shrink, demographics shift, and historic buildings face uncertain futures.

In Rockford, the story ended differently than it might have elsewhere. Instead of a vacant building or a demolition, the church's property became a community center that serves the same neighborhood the congregation once called home.

The Lutheran Church of Good Shepherd served its west side community for 79 years. Its building now houses a gym, a studio, and a new church. The mission changed form. It did not disappear.
