Rockford teen arrested after police find modified handgun near school

A 16-year-old male is in juvenile detention after police found a modified handgun on him near West View Elementary School. The teen was charged with aggravated unlawful possession of a weapon and other firearm-related charges.

16-year-old charged with aggravated unlawful possession of weapon after arrest near West View Elementary School

ROCKFORD, Ill. - A 16-year-old male is in juvenile detention after police found a modified handgun on him near West View Elementary School.

Rockford Police arrested the teen Tuesday evening following reports of juveniles with firearms near the school. Officers were called to an area near West View Elementary School at about 7 p.m. Tuesday May 5 for reports of a vehicle with multiple juveniles and firearms.

Police say they found the vehicle with six people inside at the intersection of Knight Ave. and Grenshaw St. near West Middle School. The teen was in the driver's seat and exited the vehicle when police arrived.

Police say he had a gun with an extended magazine on him. He was arrested and taken to juvenile detention.

The juvenile is charged with two counts of aggravated unlawful possession of a weapon. He faces charges for possession of a firearm without a serial number. He also faces charges for possession of a large ammunition device and not having a valid FOID.

The charges include allegations of illegally modified handgun possession.

Rockford Police did not release the name of the 16-year-old in connection with the arrest.
