A Memorial Day evening cookout at Glen Oak Park in Peoria turned into a nightmare when a group of unknown suspects opened fire on a family gathered in a pavilion.

Peoria Police responded to the scene just before 6:15 p.m. on Monday. Officers found the family shaken but unharmed. The suspects fled the area before law enforcement arrived.

No injuries, investigation underway

"No one was injured, and an unknown number of suspects ran from the scene," a Peoria Police spokesperson said.

Police have not released the number of shots fired. The department has not identified any suspects. Authorities declined to share additional details while the investigation remains active.
