A Springfield caregiver concealed the body of her elderly neighbor for over three years and used her bank card to steal more than $130,000, according to the Sangamon County Sheriff's Office.

The case began when police conducted a welfare check on Lillie Prindle, who was 86 years old, on November 6, 2025. Agents discovered Prindles body in an advanced state of decomposition sitting in a living room chair and wrapped in several blankets. The scene indicated Prindle had been dead for much longer than initially thought. Forensic analysis confirmed advanced decomposition but found no signs of injury or trauma on the remains.

Gena English-Wheat, 59, is the primary suspect and was identified as Prindles caregiver and neighbor. According to the police report, English-Wheat admitted to finding Prindle dead in the living room chair around August 2022. She covered the body with blankets and left the house without notifying authorities or the familys family. English-Wheat told investigators she did not want anyone to know about the death.

During more than three years, English-Wheat maintained the appearance that Prindle was still alive. She paid the gardener to mow the lawn and continued paying bills to keep the household active. The suspect also made ATM withdrawals to make the house appear occupied. Neighbors told police that English-Wheat regularly entered and exited Prindles home and took out the trash but had not seen her in the house for months. English-Wheat told neighbors the elder woman was living with a niece.

The investigation revealed that English-Wheat used Prindles bank card to pay for services and make cash withdrawals while the body remained hidden. In October 2025 alone, English-Wheat made at least four ATM withdrawals. Police estimate the total theft reached approximately $130,000 over the years. English-Wheat stated all efforts were to conceal Prindles death and continue receiving financial benefits from her bank account.

English-Wheat faces charges for concealment of a death. She does not currently face robbery charges despite having seven prior arrests and three prior convictions for theft. According to the Sangamon County Sheriff's Office, English-Wheat was released with an order not to approach Prindles property. She failed to appear at her first court hearing in March and now carries a skip notice.

The investigation remains open. The familys family is seeking justice. The case has shocked the Springfield community and drawn attention to the vulnerability of older adults and the importance of oversight for those who provide care.
